The Heartbeat of Production: Efficiency Strategies for Metal Fabrication Shops

Efficiency has always been crucial for any metal fabrication shop. It’s a driving force behind many of the innovations in fabrication technology, as well as the heart of many strategies for organizing the shop floor. Morton Industries is a metal fabrication shop that has done our best to organize our equipment, personnel, and other resources in a way that optimizes the productivity on the floor, and the workflow efficiency of each part from one step to the next.

First off, we have ergonomically set up our fabrication shop for the efficient flow of the workpiece from start to finish. From initial operations such as saw and bending, to median operations such as end forming and welding, and then final operations which include paint and packing, our shop physically flows west to east. All of the parts move physically from one station to the other  in a way that parts are moving one direction–no wasted movement going back and forth with the parts for different operations. Downtime between operations is one of the biggest drains on efficiency, so reducing the movement of the parts between the machines has significantly improved our efficiency.

We are also equipped with some of the latest technology in sheet metal and metal tube fabrication. Modern technologies often have tools and software that help improve workflows and reduce and even eliminate errors that could result in costly downtime and material waste. They also help to ensure that each operation is completed correctly the first time around. Good equipment also has the added benefit of resulting in parts with better quality.

Another way that we’ve improved our efficiency is by keeping all of our capabilities largely in-house, such as tool design, kitting and assembly, and powder coating–and all of them are integrated into our organized workflow for the best results. We don’t waste time shipping parts between our facility and third party suppliers. Everything is in house and completed by our experts, allowing us to finish fabrication projects quickly and efficiently.
