From Concept to Creation: The Process of Custom Metal Fabrication at Morton Industries

One of the aspects that sets Morton apart from our competitors is our ability to provide our partners with a full-service solution from start to finish–from early designs and prototypes

One of the aspects that sets Morton apart from our competitors is our ability to provide our partners with a full-service solution from start to finish–from early designs and prototypes all the way through production, quality testing, and even powder coating for a clean surface finish. We work closely with OEM’s on design changes that reduce costs, improves manufacturability, and ultimately increases the OEM’s profitability.

It starts with a design

Whether we’re making a product from sheet metal or tubing, or we’re fabricating a full enclosure, we first start with a supplied product design. Morton’s team has extensive knowledge in product design for our industry, and often collaborates with our partners’ teams to find ways to improve the initial designs and find ways to cut costs without compromising quality. When requested, we offer engineering design support and CAD design support in order to streamline material selection, labor requirements, and project logistics. During this time, we will also fabricate prototypes to test before going into full production.

Sourcing the right materials

Once we have a design that satisfies all integral parties, we use mill direct and service center sourcing to find the best materials for the project. We do all of the negotiation on our partners’ behalf, keeping them apprised of the process while saving them the time and effort necessary. This way, we can ensure that we get the right type and grade of metal to meet the project’s requirements. We regularly work with a diverse range of materials including carbon steel, aluminized steel, stainless steel, copper, and aluminum. We ensure that we source the appropriate grades to meet our partners’ specifications.

Fabrication and Finishing–bringing the design to life

During the design process, all operations necessary to get the raw material into the right shape will have been properly routed. Once the material has been sourced, we then perform those operations to make the parts, using a variety of laser cutting, bending, welding, and brazing, to meet customer specifications. We also offer in-house powder coating in multiple colors, glosses, and textures to ensure that the finished products are durable and aesthetically pleasing.

Quality Management Throughout

We maintain an ISO 9001:2015 certification that helps guide our process from design to delivery. This system allows us to identify points of control and methods for testing to ensure that products arrive at our partners’ facilities and adhere to industry standards. In addition, we are routinely audited to ensure that our procedures and processes adhere to industry safety standards.  Quality control isn’t just about testing after the parts have been completed–for us, quality is a guiding principle in everything we do.
